I am the proud owner of a male havanese; I have had him for the last four months since getting him when he was just 60 days old.
I call him Mickie, because he cost me an arm and a leg and during my school days I was a fan of the Mickie-Mo chips in Wandegeya. Mickie has just started dog training and still has a long way to go before becoming the super dog I want him to be.
That is why when I heard that the annual dog show was on for the third season, I couldn’t wait to get Mickie there so that he can meet other dogs and also get free tips on how to be a better canine from experts and breeders.
So, Saturday afternoon found me driving to Kyadondo rugby grounds where the do was held. The first two dog shows were successful but they did not have such a big turn up of people and dogs like Saturday’s event. The parking lot was full, littered with all sorts of dog breeds.
Entrance was Shs 20,000 per head, while the dogs entered free. The dogs could be entered into any competition ranging from agility and attack to obedience and tricks.
A shepherd-terrier amazed people in attack by jumping over a surface 10ft high to attack the person it is after. When it came to Top Dog – a prize given to the dog that has participated in most categories – it was a no contest for a border collie called Piglet.
Piglet owned by Myra Hill has been training in different categories for the past six years and was amazing in obedience. Hill who is not a professional dog trainer told The Observer that she uses the Internet to train Piglet.
Hill donated the Shs 300,000 Piglet won for Top Dog to UDSPA – an association that takes care of dogs. This year there was also a dog race, which had the crowd on its feet. First it was a race between jack russells followed by a race between dobermans and German shepherds.
The betting syndrome seems to have eaten big into the hearts of Kampalans, because the moment the dogs stepped on start line, fans starting placing bets on which dog would win. At least I learnt how to handle Mickie better.
